Where the Sierra foothills meet their edgiest, most romantic self.

When Relic Events reached out about a gothic romance styled shoot at the historic National Exchange Hotel in Nevada City, the creative brief was immediate: think velvet, shadow, and something untamed. The kind of florals that feel like they were gathered at midnight from the edge of a forest.

This was not a pastel wedding that we see so often in Lake Tahoe. This was a love story told in deep burgundy, near-black foliage, and the moody drama that the Sierra Nevada foothills do so well. And honestly? It's some of our favorite work to date.

The bouquet had to feel editorial and intentional — wild, weighted, and a little dangerous. Lush enough to be romantic, dark enough to mean it.

The Floral Direction

We built the bouquet around dark burgundy ranunculus, layered with near-black sweet william, chocolate cosmos, deep purple lilies and trailing jasmine vine for movement. Foliage was the anchor — blooming branches and dark leaves, soft goth quality.

The goal was something you'd actually find growing wild at the edge of an old estate. No filler, no fluff — just intentional, moody, and very much alive. No roses. 90% locally grown. The rich tones pulled beautifully against the venue's original 19th century architecture and the couple's all-black wardrobe.

Why We Love a Dark Palette

There's a misconception that wedding florals have to be light, bright, and blush. But couples planning moody, editorial, or non-traditional weddings deserve florals that actually match their vision — and deep, dramatic arrangements photograph beautifully in almost any light.

The National Exchange Hotel, with its warm amber lighting and historic bones, was the perfect backdrop. The dark blooms held their own in color and in black and white: which, as you can see from photographer Alyssa Keys' images, is everything.

This shoot was also featured on Real Weddings Magazine — which felt like exactly the right home for it.

Planning a Dark or Editorial Wedding?

If you're drawn to a deeper, more dramatic floral palette for your Lake Tahoe, Nevada City, or Northern California wedding, this is our wheelhouse. We work with locally grown and foraged botanicals wherever the season allows, and we love building designs that feel specific to you — not pulled from a template.
