Summer wedding flowers in lake tahoe: what’s in season and what holds up
If you’re getting married in Lake Tahoe this summer, you’re working with one of the most dramatic natural backdrops in the country, and one of the most logistically challenging environments for flowers. High altitude, dry heat, afternoon wind off the lake, and full Sierra sun can all work against you if you don’t plan with the season in mind.
Here’s what we know after designing florals for dozens of Tahoe summer weddings.
What’s Actually in Season
Summer in the Sierra runs hot and fast. July and August bring an explosion of locally grown blooms — dahlias, zinnias, lisianthus, yarrow, scabiosa, and sunflowers are all working hard in Nevada County and Northern California farms right now. Peonies typically peak in late June and can stretch into early July at elevation. Ranunculus are usually done by July, so if you want them in your bouquet and you’re marrying in August, we’ll need to source from further afield.
We grow and source from farms in Nevada County and work with California growers to keep things as local and seasonal as possible. In summer, that means you have a lot to work with — but the palette shifts. Expect warm, saturated color rather than the soft blush tones that feel easy in spring.
What Holds Up in Tahoe Heat
This is the question we get asked more than almost any other: will my flowers last? The honest answer is: it depends on what you choose and how we handle them.
Flowers that hold up well outdoors at elevation in summer heat: dahlias (especially ball varieties), zinnias, lisianthus, celosias, succulents used as accents, dried grasses, and most tropical stems. Flowers that need extra care: garden roses (they open fast in heat), sweet peas (delicate, best kept cool until ceremony), and anemones (they don’t love full sun).
We condition all stems in our floral cooler and time delivery and setup so flowers aren’t sitting in heat any longer than necessary. For ceremonies at venues like Edgewood or Sand Harbor where you’re fully exposed to sun and wind, we factor that into how we build your arrangements — more structure, more hardy stems, strategic use of foliage.
Venues We Love for Summer
Summer at Tahoe means most ceremonies are outdoors, and the venues that make the most of that are the ones we love working with most. Edgewood Tahoe’s lakefront lawn is the obvious showstopper — the view does so much of the work that we lean into wildflower-style arrangements that feel native to the landscape. Olympic Valley Stables in Truckee has gorgeous mountain meadow light in the late afternoon. The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe keeps you at elevation with a crisper temperature than lakeside, which is actually a gift for your flowers. And we have really been loving the North Lake Tahoe Event Center (they have done a major renovation that is lovely).
If you’re getting married at a private property or forest venue, summer is when we can begin incorporating grasses, branches, seedheads, and textural foliage that you simply can’t buy from a wholesaler.
